“I don’t want to hear a word from you if Alex is mad about you coming along,” Calico said, stomping her feet to warm up.

“Why would he be upset?”

“Maybe because you accused him of having lunch with someone else.”

“I only said what I saw. There was food on the table, a woman across from him and it was lunch time. What would you call it?”

“Just try to behave and don’t cause trouble,” Calico said watching as Alex’s truck finally pulled into the lot.

“I promise to be good, but I’m not happy about missing the special at the Diner.”

“I told you we would head there as soon as we’re done here. Anyway, I told Mama to have Candy hold back an order of chicken for us so you won’t be left out,” Calico hissed as Alex approached the doors. “Now behave.”

“Took you long enough,” Lettie grumbled as Alex worked the new lock. “We could have frozen to death out here and would you care? I doubt it.”

Alex held the door closed for a moment longer, eyeing Lettie. “You could have waited in the Jeep. I’m sure it was warm in there.”

“Just open the door and let’s get this show on the road. I’m missing dinner.”

Alex chuckled. “I think you’ll live.” He pulled the door open and ushered the women inside, then locked it again behind them. “Janet was here before church to feed and water the animals and the next round of volunteers won’t be here until this afternoon.”

“That’s because they’re all down at the Diner eating fried chicken,” Lettie snapped, pulling her red coat tighter around her. “Why is it so cold in here?”

“It’s not cold Lettie,” Calico said studying the pudgy face in front of her. “Maybe you’re coming down with something.”

“The lobby is colder than the rest of the building,” Alex explained. “Marilyn had heaters out here but with the building being empty, I didn’t think it was wise to run them.”

“See, I’m not crazy, and I’m not sick,” Lettie said with a huff.

“What exactly is she doing here?” Alex asked, nodding toward Lettie.

“I’m hoping she can get a better handle on Marilyn than I can. She’s the one who taught me so…” Calico explained.

“Isn’t that supposed to be closed?” Lettie asked, pointing to the office door.

“What?” Alex asked, turning around and seeing the slight opening in the doorway. He crouched down, pulling his gun and waved the women behind him. “Stay back, or better yet, you two should leave. Right now, just go and give Janet a call.”

Calico slowly started moving toward the door, keeping her eye on the office, expecting someone to come jumping out any minute. Before she made it three steps, Lettie grabbed her arm, pulled her into the ‘maternity ward’, and closed the door behind them.

“I thought Mr. E. was supposed to be guarding the place,” Lettie whispered.

“He is,” Calico said in a shaky voice. “Oh no. You don’t think something happened to him, do you?”

“How should I know?” Lettie asked. “I’m not a cop.
